Sympathy for the Devil; Mon, 07 Jun 2004 09:33:55 -0400

So Reagan died, and now everybody is falling all over themselves
trying to kiss his wrinkled ass. But you know what? I say fuck him.
Fuck Reagan. He should have died when he got shot. But all these
bitches are stroking his balls talking about how he was the best
president America has ever had? Man, fuck that noise. Does nobody
remember Reaganomics? Does anyone remember how fucking useless the
"trickle down" doctrine was? Does anybody remember multibillion
dollar deficits, and the widening of the gulf between rich and poor?
Does anyone remember ignoring AIDS and a poorly executed "War on
Drugs?" Or how about his trip to the SS officers' cemetary in
Bittsburg? How about "Star Wars?" That was a nice investment, wasn't
it? Oh, and deregulation, that was a good idea. Not to mention
cutting a big goddamn hole in the social security net. And shit,
don't even get me started on the Iran-Contra affair. And what's this
legacy everyone's talking about? He ended the Cold War? Bitch please.
The Soviet Union was almost ready to collapse on its own. Without a
reformer like Gorbachev in office, we'd still be watching runners
with "CCCP" on their backs blowing past us at the Olypmics. If
anything, Reagan's legacy was the setting of precedents. And by that
I mean bad precedents. Presidential accountability went straight out
the window, and the Cosa Nostra of business men, and the monied elite
were given carte blanch to escalate their assault on the lower
classes. And shit, we're still wasting money on Star Wars (and I'm
not talking about mint condition Boba Fett figurines) while American
children starve to death under the shadow of quater billion dollar
skyscrapers. My grandfather died of Alzheimers, and I personally know
what a fucked up way to go it is. It couldn't happen to a better guy
than Reagan. Long story short; Reagan is dead, and I'm fucking glad.
However, I just got word that Friday might turn out to be a
government holiday for his funeral, in which case I might have a
three day weekend! Thanks Gipp!

RE: Sympathy for the Devil

So i just read that they are going to put Reagan's face on the $10, or half the dimes that are minted in this country, if the conservatives have their way. GOD FUCKING BLESS AMERICA.

Re: Sympathy for the Devil

I they do print those bills, and if I ever meet someone who was
cryogenically frozen in 1940-1995, I think the first thing I'd show
them is one of those bills, just to blow their mind.

this was Nick v.d.K., a subtle point, but worth being made.

Re: Sympathy for the Devil

Okay, first off, they are not putting Reagan's face on any bills (it was the 20, by the way, and they also want to rename the Pentagon after him). It's just a bunch of hoopla. And in addition, I didn't like the man's politics, I'll be the first to say, but he always struck me as someone who was decent deep down and who honestly cared about the country. And while I'm sick to death of coverage about his corpse's journey, no one should be glad someone died from Alzeihmer's, or however the fuck you spell it.

Love,
Lydia

PS I'm in Mississippi again. If you're driving through Memphis, holla.

Re: Sympathy for the Devil (Ed: from Nick K.)

I think it's okay to be glad the someone died from advanced
Alzheimer's that has brought about severe dementia because they're
miserable and they're making their family miserable.

Reagan was inaugurated when I was negative three days old, so it's
not like I could have really hated him at the time he was president
(those were some pretty awesome times as far I as was concerned), but
historically he was a complete piece of shit, and that's how
presidents are judged. Some people like him a lot because he blew
people up, ignored the AIDS epidemic while it was mainly effecting
gay people, and gave them money at the expense of poor people and
future generations. The combination of these three things pretty
much gives him god-like status in their eyes, so they want to put him
in all the places where they want God (i.e. everywhere).

The thing is, though, look at who he would be replacing on money:
Hamilton is partly responsible for a lot of the aristocratic elements
of American democracy (he even spent hours at the constitutional
convention arguing that we should have a king) and Jackson made his
name on killing and stealing from Native Americans. So fuck all of
them, I don't care which one is on our money, they're all assholes.

Ok, it's ten and I'm still in the lab, so I'm kinda grumpy...

Take care,
Nicky

Re: Sympathy for the Devil

I'm not glad he's dead, but it's fine with me that he's dead. I
never knew him personally, and as a president he did any number of
terrible things. So, yes, it's bitter liberalism, and people say
nasty things. But all the "fuck him"s aren't born of being glad he's
dead, but being angry that he's never been criticized, that the
effects of his administration are ignored because the Cold War and
the recession ended when he was in office, that a lot of troubling
history is going willfully ignored. Probably as time passes this
sort of concern will find more of a voice, but my concern is it will
always be drowned out by phrases like 'great legacy' and
'all-American optimist'.
So, I quite agree with you that there's no call to be glad a man
died. But (depending on one's politics) there's no call to be
saddened, either, and plenty of call to be outraged. This article,
though anecdotal, sums it up pretty well, particularly the first two
lines:
